The pink bubble burst and splatted back onto her cheeks and hair. She quickly fingered it together before it could stick, balled it up and popped it back into her mouth. Amanda Parson has been obsessed with bubble gum since the first day I met her twenty years ago. I was kind of disappointed she did not outgrow it but fortunately I love her for her other finer qualities; like being able to get free tickets to…

I was waiting for my sister Annie to come back to the car with news of the job. It was raining so heavy it was hard to see ten feet away but I kept my eyes on the heavy oak doorway at Reals and Mast waiting for movement. Annie had been out of work for eight months, six of which she spent on my sofa bed. While I love my sister dearly I was ready to reclaim my space and my privacy. It is not like I am a social butterfly or anything but I do enjoy my solitude. Especially after…

“Take your life back!” she screamed from window vent adjacent to her seat on the bus. I put my hand up to wave her off but she had already gone back to her seat. I watched the Greyhound turn out of the lot and onto Lime Street. I thought about waiting until it disappeared from view before leaving but really what was the point. She was gone, the baby was gone, my self respect was gone.

The fourteen year Dodge chi-chugged to a start and I let it idle while I stared out the rearview mirror until my vision blurred into images from three days ago when…

Traces of blood were found on the rocky ledge above the beach where Tracy Morgan was found. Any evidence on her body was cleaned away by the waves. Everyone was shocked that her body never disppeared with the tide but what they didn’t know was that when she fell, or was pushed, one of their legs had jammed between two boulders. Had she not been found within a few days she probably would have eventually dislodged and drifted out. The police have never been able to link…

Her straw hat blew off with a gentle gust from a passing bus. A man in a disheveled suit tripped over his feet trying not to step on it. They both stooped to pick it up but Jane stopped half way when she realized he was on his way down. He handed it to her and she thanked him.
“No problem,” he said. Without pause he was off, hurrying down the street.
“No problem,” she repeated. Another chance encounter wasted? She wondered briefly as she watched him disappear around the corner.
She decided to stop at the cafe across the street and crossed where she stood instead of going down a few feet to the cross walk. She woke up three months later with a doozy of a headache wondering where her straw hat was.
The nurse laughed and said, “It’s winter hon, you won’t need your straw hat today”. Jane did not believe the nurse as she went on to tell her she was hit by …
